Wonderful as it is to be back at in-person events again, it’s even more wonderful when the event is enjoyable, meaningful, and worthwhile.
Business Beyond Borders 2022, from Digital Business Ireland had all that in spades, with contributors from all across the digital and ecommerce landscape – from Microsoft, eBay and TrustPilot to An Post, Guaranteed Irish and Magico.
I was honoured to be part of the Women in Digital panel discussion at lunchtime, discussing topics dear to the hearts of women in industry and beyond.
Moderated by DBI Women in Digital Committee Chairperson, Ashley McDonnell, the discussion ranged from our backstories and experiences, to our ideas for recruitment and retention of women in digital. We agreed that Employers need to support this retention with adequate financial measures, and this needs to be backed by Government. We also shared our thoughts on how to address the ‘confidence gap’ for younger girls and women in industry, with Niamh Tallon of HerSport.ie sharing a worrying statistic that Irish girls express one of the lowest levels of self-confidence in Europe. The panel agreed that an action we could take would be to proactively reach out and mentor young women in our networks.
All in all, an enjoyable conversation, which gave me lots of food for thought on the drive home!
